And now for something completely different. The Continental 2008 Milligan Vintage Trial takes place from Sunday 8 June to Thursday 12 June. The concept is a spider rally, with competitors based in George and the cars going out from there each day on different routes and returning to this Garden Route town.

There are at least 49 cars on the entry list I was shown, too many for my arthritic fingers to type, but the A group comprises:

1916 Chevrolet Tourer
1930 Austin 12 Tourer
1938 Mercedes 170
1931 Ford Model A
1929 Chev Sedan
1951 Morris Minor
1935 Chev Coupe

A few others that caught my ill-educated vintage eye:

1933 Alvis Speed 20; Lew Baker’s 1934 Aston Martin Mk2; Dave Alexander Rolls Royce 20/25; Borgward Isabella; 1928 Ford Pickup; 1947 Citroen L15; a couple of 1950 MG TDs; two Austin Healeys and towering above them all I guess Peter Bolez’s Silver Cloud 1.

Last week I had the chance to ride in the oldest car in the trial, the 1916 Chevrolet. Just us in the vastness of the Karoo between Middelburg and Steynsburg, a crisp morning, the sun clearing away some early cloud. Quite magical.

I have put some pics of this grand old car in the members section for free download.
