Tough times for SA heroes 4 March 2009

Jackie Pretorius

Especially sad news has just reached me today. Jackie Pretorius, one of the most colourful characters SA motor racing has produced, and a driver in several SA GPs in the 70s, was attacked in his home a few days ago and savagely beaten up.

No need to go into the details; anyone familiar with crime in South Africa can figure it out.

I was told by a distressed staff member at Wynns that he is on a ventilator in the trauma intensive care unit at Sunninghill hospital in Sandton and was due to have a brain scan later today. He has severe facial injuries, among others. He is not able to speak due to the ventilator but can have visitors. A good sign and I can just imagine the gallery of characters likely to pitch!

Many of you may recall that Jackie lost his wife in a similar attack some years ago.

Tony Maggs

Marge Viljoen told me that ex-works Cooper F1 driver and consummate sports car star Tony Maggs is also very ill at his coastal home.

SA GP images added to the website

I recently scanned a number of slides for a friend and he has allowed me to add them to the site. There are photos of Pescarolo, Servoz-Gavin, Charlton and Amon added to the 1970 SA GP folder and additional photos of Wisell, Stommelen, Hulme, Andretti and Fittipaldi gracing the 1971 file.

On the website in the 1972 SA GP folder are a number of NEW photos: Beltoise and Gethin in BRMs, Lauda and Pace in March’s, as well as shots of Cevert, Schenken Hulme and Fittipaldi.

For those for whom the Springbok Series was the BIG THING, I now have on the site a number of photos from Bulawayo in 1969 as well as 2 litre Lolas and Chevrons at Hesketh in ’70 and ’71.
