Restoration news Chevron B29

I have placed in the members’ area photographs of Formula Atlantic Chevron B29, chassis number 29-75-15.

This car was entered in 1975 UK races by Steve Choularton under the SDC banner for his friend Jim Crawford. Crawford was one of those many unfortunate individuals who grasped a ‘testing’ contract and the wisp of future glory with Colin Chapman. He fairly quickly saw the light, or more accurately total darkness, and moved on to a very successful career in America. This came to an end after a serious accident, but he is still rated as one of Indy racing’s big talents.

In 1976 this car was bought by Len Booysen for the newly introduced Atlantic series and driven by him throughout that season in Golden Flo colours (on the website use the first search option and go to year 1976, class single seaters, track Kyalami and event Atlantics). I have placed additional images of the car as it is today on that page. Portraits of Len can be found by using the second search option and typing in ‘Booysen’.

The car then passed to Dorino Trocani for the next two seasons and finally to one Sarel Pienaar in Kuruman. At this stage things got a lot hazier for historians, not just from Kuruman’s dust and heat. ANY INFO AND PICS OF THE CAR’S ACTIVITY IN DORINO TROCANI’S AND MR PIENAAR’S HANDS WOULD BE MOST WELCOME. You can pass it on to me and I will ensure the grateful present owner gets it.

The car underwent restoration for present owner Doug Brown at the hands of Andrew Thompson and his associate experts, including Mike Budd. It was fitted with a Ford BDG motor, but when expensive noises were heard conversion to BDA configuration turned out to be a more practical and cheaper option.

At present the owner is mulling returning the car to its Golden Flo livery, although there are no plans to return it to the track.
