Two issues that I find tough to deal with are Zimbabwe and copyright, especially my copyright!
And in a fashion both are on my mind now; I have been shown some programmes of Rhodesian race meetings at Belvedere in 1959 and for the Rhodesian GP at the same circuit in 1961 and they contain some fascinating stuff.
I have had a very careful look and can see no copyright claims, restrictions or photo credits in these programmes, and after real consideration I have decided to put some material from them in the ‘Members’ area. I take no responsibility for accuracy but one Cooper Borgward looks suspiciously like a Lotus 18.
The GP must have set some kind of record; 48 entries from Joe Eckhoff in a 2,2 Cooper to three Austin Healey Sprites and everything in between. One of the Sprites was entered by Alec Neave all the way from Alexandra in the East Cape, the A in A & G Conversions I reckon. Joe had a handicap time of 19 minutes 12 secs for the 60 laps. According to the handwritten note Ernie Pieterse won in his Heron Alfa, Serrurier second in a Serrurier Alfa (?) and Dr Dave Wright third in a 1,5 Cooper Climax.
But what an entry: Phaff in an ERA, Huntly in a D-type, Graham Whitehead in an Aston DBR1, Tingle of course in his Connaught, Cannell Cooper Chevrolet, Fraser-Jones Porsche Abarth, Du Bernard Zephyr Lotus, Duncan Lotus XI.
Those whose practice times were not good enough for the main race had their own Junior GP.
And the loot for winning? The scratch race winner got 250 pounds (which sounds quite handsome) and a floating trophy and miniature, the handicap winner 100 pounds and also a floating trophy and miniature. |
