DP note: I am sure many of you will pick up well-known names and personalities in the entry list. One that surprised me and may well surprise a few more was number: 47 Ove Andersson. It is THE Ove Andersson, Swedish rally star, winner of international rallies and later head of TTE (Toyota Team Europe). He now lives just outside George and runs the up-market Kwelanga Country Lodge. Appropriately, he will be driving, ah not a Toyota, but a Volvo 544.
Rallies are not my strong point but I know of at least one appearance he made in Africa – the 1975 Roof of Africa. He drove a Toyota bakkie with his international navigator Arne Hertz, and I am sure the late John Salters’ charm help persuade him to join in the fun.
I have put one photo from the ’75 Roof in the members section for free download.
Continental Milligan Vintage Trial will send drivers back in time in June
The Continental Milligan Vintage Trial, which attracts about 60 competitors from around the country, will start on Monday 9th June in George in the Western Cape. The competitors will gather on Sunday June 8th for documentation and scrutineering and their cars will be on display throughout the day in the car park at the Protea King George Hotel in George. On Monday morning, 9 June at about 8am, these fine old vehicles will be flagged off from the
hotel and will then wind their way around the Garden Route and surrounds. The entrants on this prestigious “spider” rally will travel around the George and Mossel Bay areas as well as moving between Oudtshoorn and Uniondale in the Karoo.
The event is a Closed Odometer Timed Trial against a route schedule, which sets out speeds to be maintained and monitored at various checkpoints on the way. The winner will be the driver who achieves the least amount of penalties along the route, in other words, the driver who is
closest to the pre-calculated times of arrival at the marshal points.
“These romantic vintage cars will travel along some of the most scenic landscape in the country and it will be quite a sight to see this large group of vintage cars alongside the ocean, forests and mountains, as well as through the Little Karoo. This is the 9th year that Continental Tyre is sponsoring the event and we are looking forwarding to being part of this fun rally,” says Rene Olivier, Continental Tyre PR and communications manager.
The event was originally run between East London and Port Elizabeth to encourage vintage vehicle owners in East London, who at that time did not have a club to use their cars and participate in the event. Last year the event was run between Port Elizabeth and East London. This is the 39th year that the event is being run in memory of the late Bill Milligan, who was the founder of the vintage car movement in the Eastern Cape.
“Various trophies are up for grabs in various categories and prizes will be awarded on overall results. The event finishes with a prize giving on Thursday 12th June and covers a total of about 1 000 kilometres over the four days of rallying,” adds Olivier.
